Frank Turner announces UK tour for December
June 16, 2010

I’m one of those people who has been following Frank Turner since the days before his signing to Epitaph, and a nod towards more mainstream success. When I last saw Frank live (at the 1,500 capacity UEA LCR in Norwich), he reminisced with the packed out room about having played to twenty people at The Ferryboat (tiny and rather shitty Norwich music venue that no longer exists) only a few years back…aww, we love a humble man here at Folk & Tumble.
Anyway, the lovely Mr. Turner will be heading out on a December tour of the UK, with dates as far spread as Aberdeen and Southampton, and I can’t wait to catch him out on the road again (‘The Road’ being a tremendous song by the way).
The December dates are as follows:
Review | Johnny Flynn – Been Listening
June 15, 2010

The new Johnny Flynn album is exceptional. This was expected, of course, by any who heard 2008’s marvellous debut ‘A Larum’, and were immediately engulfed by a truly outstanding modern folk musician and a man who is the sincere definition of a multi-instrumentalist.
The album begins with the upbeat and rather ambiguous (in subject matter at least) ‘Kentucky Pill’, a relentlessly catchy track that shows a new radio-friendly tilt to Flynn’s elusive sound. Moving through the album, highlights include the beautiful ‘Lost & Found’ and the heartbreaking ‘The Water’.
Adding to the strength of the release are phenomenal duets with Laura Marling and Anna Calvi on two of the tracks. It certainly helps to have a famous friend or two doesn’t it? Helps even more when they’re as talented as these two ladies.
The stand out track by far on this album – a huge number of my Twitter followers will back me up on this – is the absolutely stunning ‘Barnacled Warship’. The grace, beautiful and emotion portrayed in this genuinely creative and genuinely interesting tune show us that the new “radio-friendler” Johnny Flynn has developed and improved very positively – as if there was ever really any doubt.
You can download an album taster in the form of opening track ‘Kentucky Pill’ via this link. And then please make absolutely sure you grab a copy of this glorious release from our friends over at RecordStore.co.uk by clicking here.
Review | The Boy Who Trapped The Sun – Katy
June 15, 2010

They say that first impressions mean everything, and I think that’s probably true. I first encountered The Boy Who Trapped The Sun – otherwise known as Colin – last year when he supported the lovely Lisa Hannigan at Norwich’s Waterfront. He was charming, self-deprecating, and talented enough to make me swoon for reasons behind his (extremely) pretty face.
After an EP released through Rough Trade Records, The Boy recently signed to Geffen Records, and the first single, titled ‘Katy’, from his forthcoming album release is truly gorgeous. I just couldn’t help but put down what I was doing and have a listen (several times) when the promo copy arrived on my desk.
Though Colin comes from the Isle of Lewis in Scotland, he has that brilliant Roddy Woomble-esque American-sounding lilt to his sound, and ‘Katy’ strikes the perfect balance between radio friendly and staying true to folk-inspired roots.
As every debut single should, this one has left me chomping at the bit to hear the upcoming album from The Boy Who Trapped The Sun. For the sun’s sake, I hope when he captured it, he played it some tunes.
Introducing | Alloy Ark
June 15, 2010

So once upon a time in October 2009, Sam “Adelaide’s Cape” Taylor and I attended an absolutely disastrous Oxjam Festival in Norwich. When we arrived at the beautiful Dragon Hall for Sam to play his set, there was no sound equipment or sound man, it turned out. So, with the show running an hour late, Sam set up all the equipment himself, played a stressful 30 minute set and we made a run for it.
We ran over to Norwich Puppet Theatre, where, incidentally, bad promotion meant we were two of only five people in the 180 seater venue. But what we discovered there was this amazing boy-girl duo called Alloy Ark. And suddenly all the stress of the day was forgotten…
Now signed to NRONE Records – a label best known for girl-fronted pop/rock band The Kabeedies (though Alloy Ark are nothing like The Kabeedies), and a notoriously and painfully Norwich-centred affair – Alloy Ark will be releasing their debut EP this autumn, and I, for one, really can’t wait. The music is beautiful, unique and bustling with talent and potential.
To truly understand the simple greatness of this wondrous pair, you really should head over to their MySpace page and have a listen to their songs. My favourite tune is ‘Columbian Coffee’, but all the tracks you’ll find over there are charming little acoustic pop ditties.
I’ll be very interested to see what lies ahead for these two – I think it’s clear they have a well-deserved and very bright future ahead of them.
